THE FIVE ELEMENTS OF HATHA YOGA

1. Asanas

Psychophysical postures that work intensively from the muscles, tendons, nerve plexus and endocrine glands to the internal organs, nadis and chakras. They provide a strong stimulus to the functional balance of the diverse organs and organ systems, cleansing the nadis and balancing the chakras.

2. Pranayama

control of the breathing process.

Prana – Vital force

Yama – Control

3. Kriyas

Internal and external practices for cleansing and purifying the body. They include purification techniques for airways and lungs, stomach and intestines. They also unblock the nadis, facilitating the flow of prana through the whole body.

4. Bandhas

The term means “closing, fastening, contraction”. It is derived from bandh, which means to connect, to attach. Bandhas are contractions of certain areas of the physical body as plexus, nerves, organs and glands, which are related to the chakras, centers of vital energy, and which work channeling the energy flow 2. Bandhas have two different goals: one on the subtle plane and the other on the dense plane.

5. Mudras

Gestures performed with the hand or with the whole body that cause deep energetic and psychic effects. They group and mobilize vital and psychic energies and can thus increase awareness and direct the prana’s internal flow for diverse purposes.
